This powerful large shield, intricately carved out of a single block of “Odum” African wood, displaying several identical figures, are presumed to be the ancestral protectors for the Chief/mask, in the center of the shield.
The shield was used as a symbol of societies with political, administrative, and judicial functions. It was kept in the Chief’s court/palace, only to be displayed during important ceremonies.
